Freudenhaus? Freudenhaus!
In Germany in 1991, everybody already knew “Freudenhaus” , but nobody knew that we are making glasses...
Freudenhaus means “house of joy” and we changed the meaning to “house of optical joy”
FreudenHaus is Stefan Flatscher and Uwe Pinhammer. Two opticians who did want to change the optical business, when we started our company in 1991. We were desperate to find a store where we could present eyewear in a different way. A more lofty way. We needed a space not only to present glasses. a way to present the best eyewear lines from around the world and show our clients what the different designers had in mind.

But where could we do this?
We found an old “jugendstil” villa, in Schwabing. 5000 square feet with 4 floors. Stucco and crown moldings. Parquet floors from the early 20th century. A worn in staircase and handrails that reminded us to our grandparents’ houses. An enchanted garden with
wild grapevine to relax and refresh. Even a doorbell. A real doorbell, connected with a chain to the entrance. In the english language we do not know of a difference between bell and bell. In German we have a “Klingel” or a “Glocke”. A “Klingel “ you find on a bicycle, a “Glocke” you find on a church. We had a “Glocke” and it jingled with joy....
The place was perfect for our dream. We could create an individual world for each collection, we showcased, in it’s own room. So our “Haus” was more a “shop in shop” eyewear gallery then just an optical shop.
We felt at home right away, but now we did need a name for our “baby”. With our names we could do a Optic “Flatschammer” or “Pinscher”.... No, we had a house. A wonderful house, fun with our clients ( we built in a bar...actually 2...) and our clients should have joy with there glasses, enjoy buying glasses - away from "I need glasses " to " I want and cant wait to get new glasses". It should become a “house of optical joy” and was not only knows for the greatest selection of independent eyewear, but also for the art exhibitions and countless parties
FreudenHaus - Wir verkaufen Brillen! (which means “we sell glasses!” )opened its doors on January 25th 1992 and was our home for 10 years before we moved to the center of the city at Munich's Odeonsplatz.
